How do I hang my new artwork?
There's something about finally getting it on the wall. Seeing how the light hits it, how it changes the room, how it changes with the light through the day. This is for you who just received a piece from me (thank you 💛) and want to make sure it hangs beautifully.
Originals
Most of my original paintings come with a wire on the back, which hangs from a single hook or screw. Mark your wall at the right height, the center of the piece should sit around 145–155 cm from the floor, or 15–25 cm above any furniture beneath it. Measure the distance from the top of the frame to the highest point of the wire when pulled taut, and use that to find exactly where your hook should go. If you're hanging into drywall or concrete, use a wall anchor before screwing in. Then hang it. You might feel the need to adjust, trust your eye and gut feeling on this one. Rules only go so far, and in the end it's about finding the right balance in your specific space.
Canvas prints
Canvas prints come with a sawtooth hanger on the back, which makes them quick and easy to hang. Same general rule for height: center at around 145–155 cm, and 15–20 cm above any furniture.
Mark your spot lightly with a pencil, drill in a screw (with a wall anchor if needed), and rest the sawtooth onto it. If your print has two hangers, measure the distance between them before marking. Pro tip here is to use a level, which is crucial to make sure both points are straight. Once it's up, sawtooth hangers make it easy to nudge left or right until it sits just right.
Paper prints
Paper prints need to be framed before hanging, so the process will depend on the frame you choose. Most frames come with their own hanging hardware: a wire, a sawtooth, or a simple hook, so follow the instructions for that specific frame. Just make sure you hang behind glass to protect the print over time.
Once it's framed, the same height rule applies: center at around 145–155 cm from the floor. But again there are no absolute rules, trust your eye and your instinct, and hang it the way you feel is best.
